Holshouser’s ties to Nixon anger White House aides
A House Judiciary Committee memo reveals White House strategists upset by Holshouser’s bid for North Carolina governor in 1972 amid Nixon reelection efforts. The Feb 16 1972 note from Gordon Strachan to H.R. Haldeman complained that NC co-chair Charles Jonas Jr would not dissociate from Holshouser. Jonas dismissed the memo as ridiculous, stating independence and past campaign experience supported a united effort. Nixon carried NC 2 to 1, Holshouser won the GOP nomination and the governorship. Helms won a Senate seat.

Grain Crop Yield Below Estimate
The Agriculture Department reports 1974 wheat production at a record 1.9 billion bushels but drought, excess rain, and disease reduced the forecast by 149 million bushels from June estimates. Heavy overseas sales drain reserves to 217 million bushels, the lowest in 26 years, as prices rise toward $3.57 per bushel. Domestic and export needs for 1974 75 total about 1.86 billion bushels, leaving a small surplus of roughly 65 million by July 1 next year.
