George W. Allen, a North Carolina native who taught school before joining the Foreign Service in 1930, died Saturday at his family’s farm near Durham. He served in consular posts in Jamaica, Greece, and Egypt, rose to career ambassador and assistant secretary of state, directed the U.S. Information Agency, and later led the Tobacco Institute.

Virginia Governor Thomas Bahnson Stanley who led Virginia during thedesegregation era died at Martinsville General Hospital five days before his 80th birthday. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates and U S House before becoming governor in 1954 and helped shape the response to the Supreme Court decision on school desegregation. Surviving are three children including Thomas B Stanley Jr and John D Stanley and daughter Mrs Hugh B Chatham.
