Missile fired in new Thor IRBM test over Atlantic

Cape Canaveral AP report says the Air Force propelled the Thor Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile about 1500 miles into space to test a prototype warhead nose cone. The 65 foot rocket launched at 1 36 am EST and appeared normal with nose cone recovery efforts ongoing.

Senators Revise Omnibus Housing Bill in Senate Vote

The Senate sped a 2.475 billion omnibus housing bill to the House despite Eisenhower administration opposition. It expands federal housing programs with 1.8 billion for urban renewal, 400 million for dormitory loans, 150 million for veterans loans, and 125 million for college classroom and lab loans over six years. Hungarians Plan Resume Picketing at Soviet UN Delegation

Hungarian groups announced plans to resume demonstrations at the Soviet delegation to the United Nations after a June 22 protest turned violent. Police injured seven and 12 pickets were arrested as Hungarians protested the 1956 Hungarian revolt and Soviet tanks. The Soviet note warned of disrupted work and possible withdrawal from UN proceedings. Imre Kovas warned the group may quit the UN unless conditions change.

New Giant Magnet Unveiled At Berkeley Lab

A suitcase sized magnet to reach near absolute zero cools small samples for study. Led by Nobel laureate Prof William F Giauque, the device costs about a million dollars and is part of UC Berkeley’s eight year old laboratory project. Funding comes from ONR NSF and AEC with UC adding over one million dollars. The magnet runs at full strength drawing about 10 000 horsepower, exceeding a guided missile submarine's 6 500 shaft horsepower.

Cops Capture Pair Wanted In Kidnapping

UT Austin researchers Wilson Stone and Florence Wilson say humans could rebound from thermonuclear fallout in 26 to 40 generations, about 500 to 900 years, based on fruit fly studies near Bikini Atoll and other Pacific sites.
