Gastonia textile official A G Meyers told WPTF radio that rising tax rates and government costs in the Carolinas create an alarming situation. He compared rates to New England, noting 1930 spindle taxes of 78 cents in the Carolinas versus 43 cents in Fall River and 52 cents in New England, and warned outside capital may shy away. He urged internal reform to foster future textile growth and high wage, fair returns.

Plan 10 Discuss Reorganization Highway Patrol

Raleigh July 11 plan to reorganize the state highway patrol to fit the updated highway system and place patrolmen at key locations will be debated by the highway commission on July 22. The plan envisions six or seven lieutenants in charge of districts with options for district splits and division reassignments. Some lieutenants may be demoted to sergeants, and a premature move by Captain Charles D. Farmer prompted transfers at reduced pay pending commission action. A new pay scale cuts patrolmen to 115 with no allowances, captains to 270, lieutenants to 180, sergeants to 135, and corporals to 125.
