Non Agricultural Employment Sets New Record For Month
Non agricultural employment in eight southeastern states for May hit a new monthly high of 6,030,900, with little change from April. The gain came despite offsetting factors from railroad labor settlements and seasonal shifts in construction, while trade government and services eased. Compared with May 1954, payrolls rose about 134,800, with most states contributing to the upturn. Manufacturing remained stable at 1,963,500, as hard goods hiring rose to offset declines in soft goods and growth continued in lumber metals and stone industries.
