Pinckney Executed In Electric Chair For Berkeley County Case

In Columbia South Carolina Cyrus Pinckney a Berkeley County Black man was executed in the state penitentiary for an assault with intent to ravish a Berkeley County white woman. The chair was activated at 1 34 am and he died after about 3 minutes 54 seconds. A white minister and a Black preacher attended the passing room. Pinckney claimed he died for another man's crime and mentioned Al Christ Grant who has been reprieved until September after being judged mentally ill. They were convicted in October 1940 and appeals were denied.

Washington July 10. First returns from a poll of the House show a majority opposed to a sales tax when the revenue bill reaches the floor next week. Rep Robertson Virginia reported many members answered no to a 5 per cent retail levy. Ways and Means Committee has refused to consider a tax and aims to bring the bill to the floor under a rigid rule. Chairman Doughton NC hopes final committee action by tomorrow night for floor debate Tuesday.

The Agriculture Department announced that Federal inspection service will debut this season on nine additional flue-cured tobacco markets in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, with openings from July 28 to Oct. 1. Voter approval in May favored free and mandatory inspection on 49 markets not yet covered, but inspector shortages limit expansion this year. The service will remain on the 26 southern fine cured markets from last year.

Italians Claim Sinking of Allied Merchantman

Italian high command said an Allied 5,000 ton merchant ship in a convoy with armored cars and other vehicles in the eastern Mediterranean was torpedoed and sunk by an Italian plane. The communique also claimed Italian and German planes shot down six British aircraft over Malta and destroyed two more over North Africa.
