Pastor Starts Fund Drive To End Claremont Dispute
In Claremont North Carolina Pastor Rev. Stanley L. Stiver launched a $5000 fund drive to resolve a racial dispute over municipal services for the town's only black family. The drive aims to satisfy the problem before the U S Office of Revenue Sharing begins withholding funds citing discrimination. The town faces potential loss of 23000 in 1977 revenue sharing and repayment of 87000 in four years. The Shuford family, assessed since 1937, seeks water and sewer services after property taxes were added to the rolls, while officials cite crossing private land as a barrier.
