Western double feature reviews at Center Theatre and Martin Twin One
A contemporary review compares Big Jake and Shootout to classics like The Wild Bunch and True Grit. It finds Big Jake overreliant on familiar John Wayne tropes and lacking impact, while Shootout offers decent mood and a notable bond between Gregory Peck and a young girl but suffers from thin, caricatured antagonists and a shaky final confrontation. The critique notes shared production ties and echoes of earlier films.
