Heat and soft ice halted delivery to nine American scientists and several U. S. airmen on a floating ice island near the North Pole. Two Air Force C47s circled the island for 12 hours, refueled at Barrow, then returned to Ladd AFB. Capt. James H. Graham Jr. and Lt. Lloyd S. Kurth reported the ice strip was too soft for a landing.

Dr. Hermann Oberth the so called Father of Space Travel, 63, faces a retirement dilemma. He has a two year ABMA contract ending October, with U.S. Army option for renewal, but retirement options depend on private employment or returning to Germany for a pension of 400 dollars monthly. He seeks a private industry post as space travel consultant, with Ford or Chrysler perspectives cited as possibilities, to stay active in the field.
