Train crashes through Albemarle Sound trestle at Edenton

Three crewmen were rescued after a freight train plummeted through a 5.1 mile trestle spanning Albemarle Sound from Mackey to Edenton. Two crewmen, S. R. Bray and W. M. Munden, were reported missing as crews worked to clear wreckage. J. C. Powe said the cause was undetermined and progress was slow. The incident occurred early today near Pantego with fireman Lowery and Burton Rankin among those aboard.

State Wins Traffic Award For Licensing Program

Raleigh officials announced that North Carolina earned an Award of Achievement from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators for its driver licensing program. Elton R. Peele heads the licensing unit under the State Highway Patrol. The department also received prior honors from the National Safety Council and a top traffic supervision award.
