White Man Drives Into Klan Rally in Plains Injuring 39

A white man crashed a car into a Ku Klux Klan rally crowd in Plains Georgia injuring 39. The driver Buddy Cochran 30 of Thomaston was treated for minor injuries and jailed. One gunshot rang out as spectators fled and the rally aimed at Andrew Young prompted by Carter policy.

1977 North Carolina General Assembly Ends Record Session

Raleigh AP notes the 1977 General Assembly adjourned after 123 days the second longest session, restoring the death penalty for first degree murder, rejecting ERA, rebalancing powers of the governor and lieutenant governor, approving an $8 billion budget, and pushing major reorganizations of state government. The session also set road and water bond measures and weighed liquor by the drink. The fallout included a clash between Gov. Jim Hunt and Lt. Gov. Jimmy Green over Education Board chairmanship and gubernatorial succession plans.
