Schadt era ends as Thomasville plans new city manager
In Thomasville the exit of ex city manager Everett Schadt shadows local harmony talks. The water crisis, tied to industry hopes, remains a pressure point as officials search for a replacement and reflect on Schadt's 20 year tenure. Meanwhile summer swimming classes enroll 190 youngsters under Hardy Henry with free instruction and a staged progression from beginner to swimmer.

Charcoal Industry Grows in North Carolina
North Carolina advances a new charcoal industry using low grade hardwoods from state woodlands. Blue Ridge Coal Co in Mount Airy and Hickory Charcoal Co near Chapel Hill operate Connecticut-type kilns with five units, producing 75 to 100 thousand pounds monthly. Transplanted Eastern Tar Heel Named To Council In '53
Charles E. Stuart, a High Point City Council member since 1952, recalls 26 years in the city after arriving from Eastern North Carolina in 1929. A World War I veteran with banking and real estate work in Winston-Salem, Raleigh and Greensboro, he lives at 331 Nathan Hunt Dr. with his wife Roxie and three daughters. Stuart, born near Pembroke in Robeson County, has served on the law and public safety and public works committees and in finance, and he stresses family memories and his late son’s polio death as a formative influence.
