The Associated Press reports highway deaths rose over the Fourth of July weekend. Sidney, Neb July 2 Forty five year old Mrs Eraila Hernandez gave birth to her 16th child this week. Her husband Frank wants five more but she says 16 are enough. The Hernandez family lives in a four room house with eight children at home. The oldest child is a daughter.
In Washington the Capital Transit Co strike leaves 2,400 AFL drivers idle, halting half a million riders and prompting Sen. Knowland to warn Congress may act. Sen. Morse subpoenas Capital Transit chair Wolfson for a Senate hearing as federal mediators report no progress.
Antonio Segni, 64, a left of center Christian Democrat, accepted with reservations a mandate to form a new Italian government. He seeks further time to build a four party coalition, aiming for a decision by Tuesday. The Christian Democrats hope for rapid government formation with center民主 parties.
