Archdale progress report to the City Council cites a communications gap between planners and administration hindering public education on the Planning and Zoning Ordinance. The board notes planners lack pay and urges clearer official support as they handle new responsibilities and enforcement challenges.
The annual report outlines efforts to educate citizens on zoning procedures and streamline requests. It notes three year deadlines to discontinue non conforming uses and plans to issue one year renewable Certificate of Occupancy while aiding property owners in relocation. It calls for immediate hiring of a full time planning professional.
Vir Lee Griffin a Gaston textile worker and KL Klux Klan grand dragon along with Clarence Edward Taylor described as KKK participants marched on Monroe Main Street watched by several hundred residents. Police and deputies reported no incidents after officials allowed the parade to distribute literature and seek members.
Governor Bob Scott and Secretary of State Thad Eure will relocate from the Capitol as restoration begins on the 132 year old building. Carroll Mann Jr says the Capitol is architecturally valuable but deteriorating and notes a 525000 appropriation for 10 months of work aiming for completion by December.
The local YMCA will offer swimming classes starting February 7 and held every Monday and Wednesday through March 29. Targeted at non swimmers aged 6 to 15, the program will place enrollees in three age groups and cap registrations at 20 participants with registration ending February 4.
