The Fourth Annual State Pastor's Conference opened at First Methodist Church at 10 15 a m with Mayor Jess Washburn inviting visiting pastors to tour the city and noting at least 114 area churches. Frederick L Parks a 31 year old science teacher from Goldsboro surrendered to Raleigh police about two hours later. A student witness said Parks acted out of jealousy and opened fire.
