Winter ice left High Point and Thomasville streets strewn with wrecks. Police logged numerous collisions on Highway 311 and city streets as ambulances, fire units, and police aided drivers. 15 people treated, six fractures reported, with several ambulances rerouted and patients admitted.
Hazardous driving conditions due to freezing rain and drizzle expected to ease this afternoon. High near 37 today with a drop to very low temperatures tonight. Saturday's high around 31 and a Friday night low of 23. Last night fell to 26. Monday should bring low temperatures under partly cloudy skies.
Two men were arrested in Miami in connection with a plot to dispose of more than one million dollars. The investigation centers on plans to move the funds to Brazil amid alleged criminal activity.
The U S Chamber of Commerce says Kennedy’s tax reduction and revision plan is unbalanced and would hinder growth by overemphasizing consumer spending at the expense of investment incentives. It urges Congress to shift emphasis to spur new investment and job creation. Southern Pines North Carolina Chairman Robert Gavin of the State Republican Executive Committee said he would not resign after a central committee meeting. The committee unanimously passed a vote of confidence and planned a Raleigh headquarters and an executive secretary search. Stella Rutledge resigned as state vice chairman with a successor to be chosen at the March 8 full committee meeting in Charlotte. Gavin called the meeting harmonious.
An intelligence summary circulated to top U.S. officials says the Soviet ship Simferopol docked in Cuba last week with a significant amount of military cargo. It is the only Cuban port call with such cargo since last fall’s crisis, backing President Kennedy. The report notes the equipment did not include items with the proportions of an offensive aircraft or missile.
Senators from both parties scrutinize Soviet weaponry in Cuba with McCone and Rusk briefing closures. Testimony cites a Jan 17 ship possibly carrying arms but no broad military buildup. Morse notes no further hearings. Stennis plans formal Cuba military condition probe. Dirksen and Minshall press for independent inquiries.

North Carolina faces an Asian flu threat as health officials warn of spread in six to eight weeks after Robeson County outbreaks. 4,000 to 5,000 cases in Robeson with new cases in Halifax and Hoke counties. Koomen notes the virus affects children and those over 45.
President Kennedy announced a temporary halt to U S underground nuclear tests to push for a nuclear test ban accord. Talks between the United States Soviet Union and Great Britain resumed after a weekend recess with no reported progress.
