High Bidding Calls For Careful Play
In Cleveland I visited Alvin Landy’s Hotel Statler bridge club and watched Ollie Emrich handle a rubber game with bold bidding and precise ruffs. Emrich ruffed diamonds and clubs deftly, then used a low trump to the jack, ruffed the last diamond with the ace, and dodged a spade setup while dummy cashed clubs. The defense could have spiked the declarer with trump leads, but Emrich navigated the hand to gain the advantage.
