Market Report Shows Mixed Declines and Gains Across Sectors

Stock market activity after rate cuts posted a modest rise with the 60 stock average up 0.4 to 298.2 at noon. Industrials including steels, motors, electronics and oils led gains while mail order retail utilities and airlines fell. Large trades included Pittston, Kroger, General Public Utilities, Niagara Mohawk, and TWA with varied movements. Amex listings such as Syntex Guerdon VNL Viewlex and Camco showed mixed results.

Three From Thomasville Convicted Of Shoplifting

In Lexington three residents from Thomasville area were convicted on shoplifting charges in district court. Zonia Shoffner of Doak Street and Lissie Logan of Route 3 were sentenced to three months, suspended for two years with conditions to pay court costs and avoid Rose's Store premises for two years. Kathleen Smith of Route 3 received 30 days, suspended on the same terms.

Hunter finds courage on Christmas eve escape tale

Bailey and Conquest vanished after a hunting trip in Idaho's mountains. Bailey described surviving in snow with improvised food and shelter from Dec 26 until authorities canceled the search on Dec 24. He recalled cold nights, bear meat, and spotting one helicopter overhead during the ordeal. Conquest’s body was to be recovered from the mountains.

New York Police End Six Day Wildcat Strike

City patrolmen returned to duty carrying nightsticks and signs after delegates of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association voted 229 to 112 to end the six day walkout. The parity pay issue remained unresolved as court action on Taylor Law penalties loomed, with negotiations continuing among the city, firemen, and other uniformed services. Mail Strike In Britain Hits Hard

Britain faced a lengthy postal strike as wage talks collapsed and no new negotiations were planned. Post offices stopped accepting telegrams and mailboxes were sealed as a midnight strike began, halting most Britain to world mail routes and forcing private couriers to ferry letters to France.
