Bearded Life at French Frigate Shoals Coast Guard Outpost
At the French Frigate Shoals in the Pacific, 15 Coast Guardsmen live on a coral strip 450 miles northwest of Honolulu. They ration time by plane arrivals, grow beards for diversions, and maintain a LORAN base built in 1952. Lt. (jg) Robert T. Getman leads the crew as they endure solitude, occasional beer, pastel mashed potatoes, and the absence of trees or girls.
