Attendance at the Southern Furniture Market remains steady on day two of the two week show with buyers selective yet active. Market Manager Paul Casey calls the reopening postwar market the most stable since the war, noting satisfactory dollar volume and a shift toward contemporary lines and bold colors, especially in Southeast displays.
The North Carolina utilities commission at a Raleigh hearing reviewed a $300,000 water project for Archdale Trinity Allen Jay and nearby residential areas south of High Point. He warned that price peaks could ease only if Congress allows cutting exports and urged aid to nations to buy more meats feeds and grains from abroad if feasible.
A weatherbeaten deed dated March 10, 1892 was filed yesterday with Forsyth register of deeds J. Lentz in Winston Salem. The official cited the long delay reflecting old-fashioned trust and bonds.

In Mars Hill two farming families mourn the loss of a father and son each. Jeter P. Robinson 55 and Max 26 perished alongside Orville Williams 36 and J P Williams 17 in a collision between a car and a tobacco laden tractor trailer. Max was thrown free. others died in flames. Marvin Lewis Modica, driver of the truck, is jailed in Asheville awaiting an inquest.

Washington report says Senate Banking Chair Tobey backs a "get ready" meat rationing bill while House Banking Chair Wolcott remains opposed to granting Truman more inflation powers. The measure, pushed by Flanders and Javits, would authorize prep for rationing and allow printing ration books with Congress able to veto moves to implement. Tobey supports readiness though undecided on actual rationing. Agriculture urges stand by authority to return rationing on a limited basis.
Washington scene reports the administration moving to save grain with a Republican anti inflation act approach. Secretary of Agriculture Anderson plans a meeting with the brewing industry to urge voluntary conservation measures under a Luckman era program ending January 31.
John Foster Dulles, Republican foreign affairs adviser, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the Marshall plan for 16 Western European nations is a path to peace. He warned Soviet pressure aims to destroy free governments, and urged a substantial US commitment as enlightened self interest.
Arab fighters struck the Jewish settlement of Yechiel northeast of Acre in reprisal for raids. Police said fighting continued hours later as Jewish police evacuated casualties, the vehicle burned. Casualty figures were not officially released amid broader unrest.
