Rioting inmates at Pennsylvania's Western Penitentiary seized four guards as hostages demanding better conditions and a parole investigation. Over 1,100 inmates smashed windows and set fires as 500 police ringed the facility near Pittsburgh.
A quiet North Carolina weekend saw two violent deaths. W C Oglesby of Cliffside was fatally injured when his car overturned and burned on U S Highway 321 near Lincolnton. Walter Medlock, 51, Morgan ton carpenter, died in a fire at his brother Sam Medlock’s small frame house where he resided.
Registration for the 56th semi annual furniture and rug show began at 8 a.m. at the Southern Furniture Exposition Building and grew to 1,500 by noon as buyers arrived to inspect new rug and furniture innovations. Last January there were 1,742 total registrations.
Dealers from far and near flock to the Exposition Building for the southern furniture display. Attendants opened by 6:30 a.m. and by 10 a.m. orders picked up as agents signed in. The scene resembled a convention as retailers and wholesalers prepared for a brisk 1953 market.
President-elect Dwight D. Eisenhower traveled by special train from New York and arrived with his wife to a festive Washington welcome. A 15 car motorcade carried the couple to the Statler Hotel as preparations for the inaugural ceremonies intensified with a 10 mile, three hour parade planned and an expected crowd of about 500000.
The United Church hosts its 14th annual institute in Raleigh with an address by Chancellor R. R. Milford of Lincoln Cathedral England. The six week series features national and international speakers exploring the theme Strengthening Freedom in America.
Dr Ralph G Fleming reports Gov Umstead, recovering from a heart attack at Watts Hospital, has developed fever and symptoms suggesting a cold or influenza. The 10 a m update notes progress on the governor's heart condition remains very satisfactory with the recent fever.
Senator Hoey of North Carolina urged a full investigation by the Post Office Department before closing 21 Wilkes County post offices. He noted plans to shut 21 of 36 offices and to consolidate 13 star routes with rural routes, amid protests from residents. Representative Deane said he is examining the matter.
Six FBI agents seized six slot machines at the American Legion Hut and the Elks Club in Brevard on Saturday. Three men were arrested Wallace J. Hartson Charlie Disher and A E Onenden all posted $500 bonds. Hartson waived preliminary hearing and Disher and Onenden face tentative hearings January 31.
New York reports a morning of slow dealings with prices drifting within a tight band. Turnover in the first hour was 270000 shares, compared with 300000 a week prior, as rails edged higher while industrials slipped slightly and oil majors moved little.
Raleigh notes the 1953 General Assembly readies for a busy week with House Speaker E T Best Jr. set to announce committee posts and hearings on spending bills as Lt. Gov. Hodges reshapes Senate committees. The proposed two year budget tops 637.9 million dollars, with funds for departments highways teachers and state projects under review. Governor Umstead, hospitalized, urged revising sales tax exemptions to fund essential services.
American Superfortresses and fighter bombers blasted Red supply lines and troop concentrations across central Korea. Fifty-hundred pound bombs fell on targets in North Korea while B-29 crews from Okinawa hit a major storage area near Hongwon and a rail yard at Hamhung. Aerial strikes followed Sunday’s attacks as Marine and fighter bomber aircraft supported front lines near Kumhwa and Sniper Ridge.
Charles E. Wilson plans to promise to disqualify himself from GM contract matters as he testifies before the Senate Armed Services Committee. GOP leaders doubt quick confirmation but eye later approval without altering the anti-conflict law. Senate committees also prepare hearings for Hobby Humphrey Weeks and Brownell. Wilson’s stock stake cited as obstacle.
Fire destroyed the Asheville Furniture Co. on Biltmore Ave early today causing about 22 000 dollars in stock damage and 5 000 dollars to the three story building. Smoke from the basement blaze spread to a neighboring department store as firemen fought the flames for over two hours.
Floods raged through California and Oregon coastlands as a third day of storms left over 1,000 displaced. Deaths reached at least 10 while highways and rails were blocked and two counties declared states of emergency. Evacuations spread from Eureka area to Klamath and Coquille River farms.
The program outlines events for inauguration day with times in eastern standard. It includes services at National Presbyterian Church, a departure from the Statler Hotel escorted by Senate and House leaders, and the White House to Capitol procession ending at the Senate president’s office.

At 12 45 p m the president and Mrs Eisenhower dine with guests in the Senate offices. At 1 30 p m they lead the inaugural parade to the White House and watch from the mansion stand. The parade lasts over three hours. At 10 p m inaugural balls are held at the National Guard Armory and Georgetown University Gymnasium.
