A state wide conference in Charlotte will address federal law violations with three U S district attorneys from North Carolina slated to attend. The meeting follows recent student protests and inquiries into governance and oversight.
A four year old boy drowned yesterday afternoon at a gravel pit near Dunn. Rescue crews recovered the body, and authorities investigated the incident as a possible accidental drowning.
Judge J. Paul Frizzelle was to deliver the charge to the all male jury this morning in Bertie County. Testimony began Tuesday during jury selection from a venire for the rape case involving a 15 year old accuser.
The State Bar Council said it found insufficient evidence to discipline Whiteville attorney R E Weaver over a parole case. The charges were based on affidavits by Mrs Eene Earl Summerlin of Goldsboro alleging the lawyer collected 4250 dollars to arrange a parole for her husband.
New York prices rose in moderately active trading with oils and no issues leading the advance. Pure Oil topped petroleum gains while J I Case extended gains after a split proposal as rails rose fractions and automotives and utilities stayed steady. Investors remained cautious awaiting foreign developments and the budget message.

Charles Rhinehart of Brooklyn Iowa received credit for the kills and damage respectively as Allied air forces tallied 460 losses, most to anti aircraft fire, during weather halted operations.
In Panmunjom Koreas armistice talks stalled with rapid developments. The Communists accused a Red truce convoy on the Pyongyang Kaesong highway of attack. a U N investigation was promised. Alan Winnington likened the atmosphere to last Augusts breakdown. A US UN delegation issued a no progress stance while safeguards against air attacks were discussed.
Charlotte report says trial in recorder's court next week on charges of assaulting a 23 year old Negro with a blackjack. George Lyles filed warrants against four officers yesterday, by V. Bell, with the complaint noting a mistaken identity for his brother.
Churchill sails for London aboard the Queen Mary after agreeing to allow a U S admiral to head NATO's Atlantic force, while Britain gains U S aluminum and tin deals and pursues further favorable terms. The talks also touched on atomic bomber basing in Britain and NATO command in the North Atlantic.
Egyptian reports say British troops and Egyptian forces clashed for four hours in the Suez Canal zone near Port Said. The Egyptian side claimed naval guns were used from Port Said harbor while guerrillas attacked a British camp at the Mediterranean. Casualties included one guerrilla killed and a passerby wounded as authorities declared a state of emergency.
In San Francisco a Republican forum for four GOP hopefuls ended with Harold Stassen urging MacArthur’s posthumous honors and a sharp line against socialism. Earl Warren and David Ingalls pressed for a pro fiscal program while Eisenhower and Taft fields claimed gains. Delegates moved toward uninstructed status as party strategies clashed.
After flooding and landslides, about 2,000 residents evacuated to shelters began returning as officials said the danger eased. Mayor Fletcher Borwin praised disaster crews while authorities warned of residual hazards and noted Los Angeles rainfall totaling 17.21 inches for the season.
Defense appealed the March 7 death sentence for Lafayette Miller a Black parolee in a shotgun slaying case. The Beaufort Superior Court jury of three Black and nine white members deliberated ten minutes before convicting Miller and mandating death, with Miller claiming Mrs Opal Boyd urged him to kill her husband Harvey Boyd.
H J Brunnier of San Francisco has been selected by Rotary International nominating committee as its candidate for president. If no other nominations are made, Brunnier will become president at the Rotary convention in Mexico City May 25 to 29.
Olive, a Lexington former Superior Court judge and veteran Tar Heel political figure, formally enters the governor race. He paid the $150 filing fee to Secretary Raymond Maxwell of the State Board of Elections yesterday.
A Korean Airlift flight carrying 40 soldiers crashed at sea 480 miles north of Seattle. Seven survivors were recovered in a rowboat, with Coast Guard ships and aircraft dispatched from Anne Island and Patricia Bay. Northwest Airlines reported engine trouble on a separate Alaska to Seattle flight.
The Section of the Society Foresters concluded its oma meet una pase in Durham as L. E. Chaiken of Charleston South Carolina was elected chairman. He succeeds George W. Dean of Charlottesville Virginia.
BACIN UP The Aluminum Co of America plant here will resume talks with the United Steel Workers next Tuesday. The company says it will make every effort to reach a wage agreement after union demands for more than 50 cents per hour were put forward yesterday. The union threatened to strike if no deal is reached by Feb 1.
The report states a low around 42 degrees tonight and a high near 66 degrees tomorrow. It also mentions a previous high of 53 and a last night low of 38.
