Wilmington manamer of a local Veterans of darts club faced a six suspended sentence for possession of gambling devices. Edwin Toews paid a $100 fine in City Court and Judge Winfield Smith suspended the sentence.
Superintendent L A Bruton reported about 350 children sick today in Whiteville marking the largest flu outbreak since last week. The figure reflects a sharp rise as the influenza bug spreads through the district.
A small black and white terrier was found hanged from a dogwood limb near Troy. Sheriff Elwood said the dog had been shot and gashed about the toes with a knife in a case of animal mutilation reported from California to Raleigh.
The North Carolina Council of Churches sent President Truman and local congressmen a resolution condemning universal military training and urging Gov Kerr Scott to outlaw the Ku Klux Klan. Delegates at the closing sessions voted unanimously to oppose any legislation creating universal military training.

Salisbury based report says Catawba College students seek a full account from a trustee committee over a $13 000 shortage in the business office funds last year The college says the money was recovered two faculty members resigned and no criminal action followed Student government leader Jack Kelly called a meeting and the student Senate will request more details from the committee Alumni protests were strong at the case.
In Washington North Carolina Lafayette Miller a young Negro parolee testified that Opal Boyd twenty killed her husband Harvey Boyd twenty one after Miller refused. He said she urged him to kill for her and described a demand for car keys and money during the attack. He described a later trunk confinement and law officers testifying to premeditation.
General Collins tells the House Armed Services Committee civilians would run the universal military training proposal. The plan, rejected in part by the committee, would involve 60,000 volunteers aged 17 and 18 over 112 months, agreeing to 18 months of active air duty after graduation.
Capt Henrik Kurt Carlsen rested at home in Woodbridge New Jersey with his wife and two daughters Sonja and Karen. A 24 hour guard protected the house to keep well wishers away while neighbors and friends greeted him after a New York welcome. Woodbridge prepares for a Carlsen Day as he faces another public reception tomorrow.

A string of Pacific storms drenched California hospitals roads and homes. In Los Angeles five dead as floods swelled the Santa Ana River and the city eyed near 20 inches total rainfall. Santa Ana River drownings raised tolls. Eastern California and Nevada faced record snows as the City of San Francisco and Portola-area lines struggled with ice and isolation.
New York reports market gains as steel shares rise on active trading amid Churchill's praise for American steel. Steel issues advance with Crибicle and Wheeling up, Union Pacific gains, Anaconda hits a new high, and aluminum stocks lift. Oil shares show scattered increases with several special issues up.
In Washington Churchill pressed for token U S forces in Suez but officials and lawmakers rejected the idea noting it would destabilize the Arab world and jeopardize U S prestige. Namm of Brooklyn will be principal speaker with Judge John J. Parker and former Governor Cameron Morrison among others.
In Elizabethtown a coroner's jury will convene Monday night to probe the death of political figure Ulysses S Page. Walter Sawyer 34, a tenant farmer, is charged with the murder and has confessed stating Page “took food from my babies mouths.”
Washington reports Allied officials expect possible armistice talks in Korea but warn Red China that any major violation of truce terms would trigger rapid Allied retaliation. The plan includes targeting railways power plants and military sites if negotiations fail or ceasefire breaks down led by discussions echoed by Churchill in Congress.
Edgar Faure won approval from the National Assembly to form the 15th government of the Fourth Republic. He must assemble a cabinet from Radical Socialists Popular Republicans and Independents. Socialists backed him but may stay out. The new government is not expected to differ much from Rene Pleven's resigned administration.
