Judges Use Haircuts as Fines in North Carolina Courts
In Raeford and Manteo judges offered defendants a haircut instead of or with fines to avoid jail. Raeford defendant English chose a $10 fine and court costs. Dupree said a haircut could substitute for penalties to “look like a man.” Critics call such practices improper and unconstitutional.

Indians vow to save Old Main at Pembroke State University
Pembroke State University plans to replace the 1923 Old Main brick building with a 1.6 million auditorium, despite Indian leaders led by Harold Deese of Maxton opposing demolition. They argue Old Main honors the school's early Indian ties and have gathered 7 000 petitions. University President Dr. English E. Jones says renovation is economically unfeasible and land is limited. A replica of Old Main under glass in the new auditorium reception area is proposed.
