President Syngman Rhee announced an April deadline for peaceful Korean unification and warned of action if talks stall. He repeated a 180 day warning and said he would allow Allied and Communist diplomats extra time to set a peace conference time and place.
Relief from two days of rain arrives as a cold air mass sweeps across Tennessee into the Carolinas. Temperatures may drop below freezing in the Piedmont and mountains with snow flurries possible in North Carolina's western edge.
A mid January blizzard sweeps the Northern Plains from Montana to Minnesota as bitter Arctic air moves south and east. Record lows drop to the minus 30s in places like Cut Bank and Minot while fresh snowfalls of three to six inches are forecast north of Harrisburg, Elmira, and Albany.
The Air Force announced two pilotless bomber squadrons with Matador guided missiles will be sent to Germany this year as part of a massive retaliatory strategy to deter Soviet aggression. Officials note no reduction in European troops is planned.

Four power talks to decide the site of the foreign ministers conference in Berlin reopen today in West Berlin. The British chair issued a communique stating a meeting of representatives from the United Kingdom United States France and the U.S.S.R. will be at British headquarters at 5 p.m. German time. The Western side pushes for three fourths of meetings in the Allied Control Authority Building American sector while the Soviet side demands half the sessions in their area.
The United Nations Command says it will accept 22,000 unrepatriated anti-Communist prisoners as civilians, not staying prisoners per India's condition. Gen. John E. Hull notes the U N will treat POWs as civilians by January 22, while Indian Lt. Gen. K S Thimayya warns it would violate the armistice to change their status.
President Eisenhower called key advisers to the White House for a conference on international atomic policy. Attendees included Secretary of State Dulles and Atomic Energy Chair Lewis Strauss, amid talks on a Soviet participatory pool for peaceful nuclear resources.
In Chattanooga Tennessee a 39 year old man identified as Doc Gregg was charged with assault and attempted rape after a 24 year old waitress was attacked on a city street. Police consider him linked to nine other recent assaults and will hold a lineup for other victims. The woman, a divorced mother of nine, was kicked and her right ankle bruised as she resisted. She said the attacker did not rape her and fled after her screams.
Desoline Wheeler Wood, found guilty of second degree murder in the slaying of 14 year old Henry Lewis Mack, was sentenced in Superior Court to 5 to 7 years in Woman's Prison. The %-year-old Negro woman from 421 Short Spring St. was convicted of murdering a neighbor's son.
The High Point Thomasville Hi Toms signed a limited player agreement with Cincinnati for the 1954 season. Four Hi Toms officers will fly to Cincinnati to finalize terms and plan spring training. Cincinnati owned players will form a large portion of the squad and a manager choice will follow Orange club guidance.
The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis plans extensive pre administration tests for each polio vaccine batch. Nine tests will be conducted by the foundation, the University of Pittsburgh Dr Jonas Salk lab, and the U S Health Service, with trials slated to begin next month on schoolchildren. Charleston County S C has applied to participate.

Jimmy Woods of Asheville North Carolina gave up a 60 mile double swim around Miami Beach after a four foot long friendly fish swam with him in Biscayne Bay for about an hour. He said the fish brushed his knees with its fins and then disappeared toward a shark sighting. plans to return in May.
Detroit police seek two professional diamond thieves linked to a $340,000 gem holdup. Anthony Seaton of An toville Galleries in New York said the heirs followed his arrival and that 11 pieces were stolen, with seven worth $150,000 left in a hotel safe. Seaton was bound and gagged but escaped with help after triggering a hotel operator.
Washington report says Congress likely to vote today or next month on substantial pay raises for members and federal judges starting next January. The plan would raise annual gross income to about twenty seven thousand five hundred dollars from fifteen thousand, with mixed opposition and support among lawmakers. Burdick argues many are overpaid and cites travel and junkets, while Halleck forecasts approval though not necessarily the full commission recommendation. Hoffman and Burch oppose chances of blocking the measure. if approved it could ripple into private sector wage expectations.
Archie K. Davis senior vice president of Wachovia Bank told the Small Business Institute in Chapel Hill that boom conditions since World War I are contracting but he does not foresee a sharp fall in near term. The talk opened a two day institute sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Association and UNC Duke Wake Forest law schools.
