Washington and Trenton reports show Hauptmann facing new delays as legal maneuvers unfold. Justices reviewed papers for a potential reprieve while officials debate farm policy and budget impacts amid ongoing AAA and taxation questions.
At a senate investigation into wartime finance J P Morgan rejected the claim that American entry into World War I was bought with English money. The hearing examined whether submarine warfare or allied trade spurred the U S toward war, with diaries and Lansing’s views cited.
Premier Laval secured a vote of confidence in the chamber of deputies by 315 to 252, defeating Leftist opposition. The radical socialist bloc in caucus had condemned Laval's policies, but Laval pressed for postponement of debate and sought priority on agricultural matters, winning the challenge.

London January 16 The Discovery III captain says a plane was sighted over Little America and a man seen in the Bay of Whales. The official note from the Discovery committee says the boat arrived at Bay of Whales at 10 P M January 15 with one man sighted and a machine observed, message garbled awaiting repetition.
The Southerner, a twin motored Douglas airliner, smashed into a wooded swamp killing 17 aboard. Investigators led by Eugene L. Vidal begin a formal inquiry as guards protect wreckage and salvage crews recover parts including a jammed speed indicator and landing light switches. Authorities noted high cruising speeds prior to impact.
In Richmond Virginia January 16 the General Assembly awaited committee reports on several bills with public hearings planned to gauge opinion on proposed laws. Lieutenant Governor James H Price will appoint two Senate members to complete the investigating committee on old age pension costs. The Muse resolution study is to begin within 30 days.
Three pupils Harold Alspaugh 10 Evelyn Styers 14 and Marvin Lindley 10 suffered minor injuries when their school bus rolled after a car struck it. Driver EB Reece identified as the auto driver and Carl Shouse the bus driver were cited to appear in city court on reckless driving charges.
ELIZABETH CITY January 16 P T Burgess of Old Trap chairman of the executive committee issued a call for the district convention to be held February 8 The meeting will elect a delegate and alternate to the national convention in Cleveland instruct the delegate on the presidential candidate and perhaps name an elector.
The American Federation of Labor opens its two week meeting in Miami Florida with an early agenda item to draft a constitutional amendment enabling federal regulation of working conditions. President William Green notes 500000 new enrollments and reviews court decisions on social security and labor legislation including the Guz Huffey and Wagner measures.
J F Owens a Greene county farmer was jailed in Wilson amid an investigation into the killing of Ed Nethercutt and the wounding of his son Lyman at a Snow Hill area farm. Owens says he shot after Ed Nethercutt advanced while his father held a brick and claims Lyman had threatened him.
Amelia Earhart nationally known aviatrix leaves by motor for Rock Hill South Carolina where she will address Winthrop College students tonight. She spoke here to about 1 500 at East Carolina Teachers College last night.
Judge H A W Skeen refused a new trial for Edith Maxwell the 21 year old mountain teacher sentenced to life in prison for the first degree murder of her father Trigg Maxwell. Defense given 60 days to appeal after hearing from Drs Tudor and Foust about autopsy findings supporting head blows as the cause of death.
In New York City a 3 P M conference in Fiorello La Guardia's office was planned with New Jersey Governor Harold Hoffman, with attendees including J Edgar Hoover Colonel Norman Schwarzkopf and Lewis J Valentine. Officials avoided confirming Hauptmann case details amid Lindbergh case speculation.
Nine people are dead after a tri motor plane crashed in Colombia's Caqueta department. Two women died and seven survived. two others are seriously injured. Names include Major Ascateguil and Captain Obando. Rescue teams and motorboats rushed to the Mecaya river to aid survivors.

Durham January 16 officers say worry over her father's health contributed to the death of Lila Chestnutt 28 a Grove County High School teacher. She inhaled gas in a private residence bathroom where she boarded leaving a note directing the distribution of her personal effects Survivors include her parents Mr and Mrs J N Chestnutt of Rocky Mount NC and two sisters Mrs J M Young of Spartanburg SC and Mrs G K Hewett of Wilmington NC
Kinston police jail a man who wandered into a police station seeking ham and eggs and said he was hungry. He claimed he mistook the jail for a cafe and called the mistake a fool thing that ought to be jugged.
