State Lawmakers Weigh Session Prospects and Centralization Risks
Dr. J. T. Burrus and Rep. Rupert T. Pickens returned to the city after the weekend to assess the legislature. Pickens said it is too early to gauge the body’s makeup and predicted a possible short session, while Burrus warned delays and cautioned that centralization could hinder progress already eroded by years of deteriorated roads and weakened schools. He argued the 1933 assembly reversed local school support and set back reform, urging avoidance of centralized control.
