Wake Forest rallied in the final two minutes scoring 11 of 12 free throws to beat NC State 83 76 in a conference game. Demon Deacons coach Jack McCloskey credited the late accuracy as the key, saying missed free throws lose games and made ones win them.
Maryland upset South Carolina 31-30 in overtime at Cole Field House as Jim O'Brien hit a short jumper with two seconds left. O'Brien also converted a late layup after a turnover to seal the win amid tense atmosphere following a previous Dec. meeting.
High Point College upset Appalachian State 89-86 as four Panthers hit double figures led by John Kirkman with 34 points. Pete Collins 17 and 14 rebounds, Joe Wilson 16 boards, and Teddy Lewis sparked off the bench. Appalachian’s Pete Garner led with 26 as HPC improved to 6-? on the year.
Carolina controlled the routing of Duke Saturday night, never trailing after the opening exchange and building a 79-70 lead with 30 seconds left. Chadwick led the Tar Heels with 19 points as Kim Huband and Lee Dedman contributed in relief, while Jeff Melchionni paced Duke with late scoring efforts.
Kentucky Colonel guard Louie Dampier extended his consecutive free throws streak to 57 but Carolina left Louisville with a 130-125 ABA victory. Bob Verga scored 33 off 13 of 22 shots, Joe Caldwell added 25, Dampier 32, and Cincy Powell 29 for Kentucky.
Virginia built a 16 point cushion after halftime then withstood a Clemson rally to win 66 56 in Charlottesville. Scott McCandlish buried his last seven shots as Virginia improved to 8 2 while Clemson s Dave Angel led the Tigers with 18 points.
Davidson Wildcats beat West Virginia Mountaineers 66 to 57 as guard Bryan Adrian returned from injury to score 17 points in Saturdays game. The New York City junior had been sidelined for nine games recovering from knee surgery.
Elon, led by Tommy Cole with 28 points, beat Catawba 80-78 in Salisbury to extend their conference winning streak. Pat Berry tipped in at the buzzer after Catawba tied it 78-78 with 1:27 left, ending a dramatic rally.
