Jury convicts two Negro men in Arkansas assault case
In Marion Arkansas on January 1 1930 two Black defendants Frank Carter 26 and Theo Thomas 28 were found guilty by a jury of 11 white men and one Black juror for the assault of a white girl. They were sentenced to be electrocuted on February 8 after a seven minute verdict. The foreman said the verdict was reached after a one day trial before Circuit Judge Neil Killough. The juror John Claybrook 66 a white haired farmer from Topaz Arkansas was noted as the first Black juror in such a case in southern states since Reconstruction.
