In Ely Minnesota AP report the dogcatcher will be off Jan 15 to 17 leaving dogs alone but watching stray cats amid a crowd of over 500 dogs. The second annual All-American Sled Dog Races offer prize money.
Mrs Genella Barton Allison of Claremont High School Hickory chosen Monday as one of five outstanding teachers nationwide and a candidate for National Teacher of the Year. She started journalism 34 years ago with little training and credits her late husband for help. Selected from 48 teachers by national educators, the award is from the Council of Chief State School Officers and Look Magazine, with national winner announced in spring and presented by President Nixon.
RALEIGH AP Gov Bob Scott outlined the proposed statewide higher education board powers to guide state supported institutions. He urged a comprehensive agency with broad authority over campuses programs budgeting and executive leadership, plus a unified 15 school budget. Appalachian and Western Carolina endorsed studying reorganization and keeping local boards with limited powers. a committee will draft a position statement for the legislature.
In northwestern Cambodia two U S Air Force Phantom crewmen remain missing after a Sunday night crash during a mission over southern Laos. In South Vietnam a convoy was ambushed on Highway 20 with one American killed and another wounded. Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces clashed at four points in eastern Cambodia, with claimed Viet Cong and North Vietnamese deaths totaling 37.
A Sumter South Carolina bank trimmed its prime rate to 6 3 4 percent on Monday. The National Bank of South Carolina, based in Sumter, followed with a 1 4 percentage point cut to 6 1 2 percent, though initial reports from North Carolina National Bank were later retracted as erroneous.
Pittsburgh faced a citywide disruption as teachers boycotted classrooms affecting 73,000 students and maintenance workers continued without a contract while talks stalled. About 230 printers strike shut Press and Post-Gazette production, leaving 600,000 subscribers seeking radio and TV updates. Gov elect George C Wallace married Cornelia Ellis Snively a 57 year old divorcee at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery. The couple honeymooned at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear after a post wedding dinner at Mrs Ruby Austin's home. They have six children from previous marriages and Wallace's late wife Lurleen Wallace had previously served as governor.
