High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - January 4, 1972, High Point, North Carolina Take Iii la Himl in Abbey Here tonight the High Point Enterprise by Paul Shinn sports thoughts a As much As it pains me. In a about ready to agree with some of my non sporting buddies about the amount of statistical material viewers of television football games have to put up with. After faithfully sitting through the Long new years weekend and trying to take in seven games. I Drew the conclusion that football is dehumanizing. Not in the sense that the disillusioned football players mean it. But in the sense that the game has been turned into a game of numbers rather than a game of people. Maybe its the fault of adding color men to the broadcasts. A lot of time there Isnit enough for two men to talk about so one has to talk about such Boring statistics As the percentage of successfully converted third Down situations a team has made during the game. In the Case of the Miami Baltimore game sunday Miami got beat bad on those figures but still won the game. Announcer Curt dowdy Wasny to kidding when he said a statistics Are for the Only thing is that statistics arc also making losers out of the fans who would be much better off learning facts about Ball players than they would being jabbed in the ear with numbers on numbers. And not. Please those same old worn Gowdy facts which he uses Over and Over every game. Besides the conversion third Down stats another set of figures has been added to games during recent years. That is the number of minutes each team keeps the Ball during a Given Quarter and what it did with the Ball while it had it. Here again the figures May have no relation to the outcome of the game. A team May score on the first play from scrimmage and use 30 seconds of time while another May take five minutes and Settle for a missed Field goal. And with that goes the number of plays per team per game. The same answer for the Possession argument May be used Here. Statistics May be All right for sports writers and broadcasters if they feel they need them for pos game analysis or to show averages Over a season or series. But one of the things that makes covering football games for newspapers is that the correspondent is flooded with so much statistical information that will never see the Light of Day in the paper that it frequently takes his mind off what he is trying to do make an intelligent report on what has happened on the football Field. Only in certain cases will statistics make a Heck of a lot of difference in reporting. The information May be a necessary thing for coaches when they sit Down to figure out what to do about next weeks opponent but the television broadcasters would be doing the viewing Public a great service by talking More about the action and less about figures. A simple rundown at halftime giving Basic information As to Yards gained who scored and some highlights would seem to be sufficient to keep everybody up with what s going on. When you think about it most statistics Are Only averages anyhow. They done to even show the potential of one team just what has happened in a certain number of previous games. That makes them even less valuable in any one game because averages Are built Over a Long period of time and May be completely misleading when the game has begun. I wont go so far As some who think that All Holiday Ball games should be cancelled but after this past weekend it is pretty obvious that the games could be made More enjoyable if the Fellows in the Booth would do some More background work and Les mouthing on the junk. The changes will reflect in tonight s no conference game against Belmont Abbey at High Point s alumni gym at 8 of clock. It will be the second meeting Between the two teams mpg won the first one 80-77 on a 38-Point Effort by Tubby Smith. The biggest expected difference in tonight a lineup is that Sophomore Center Pete Collins was not announced As part of the first five. Collins has been bothered by a combination of knee pain following surgery this summer and something the coaching staff considers less than fully Active play. The starters according to assistant coach Bill Davis will probably be Steve Allen. Rick Foelber John Kirkman Tubby Smith and grog Bennett. It will be Kirkman a second straight starting assignment since scoring 26 Points in a losing Effort against Guilford in the last game. Bennett is also starting again after losing his berth after the season had gotten under Way. Head coach j. D. Barnett is also expected to be Back in town for tonight s game following the improvement of his father who suffered a heart attack last week. Barnett missed the Guilford game. High Point is 4-6 for the year. Belmont Abbey has a new coach in Bob Hussey but the crusaders gave the panthers All they could handle in a december meeting Carl Bell scored 20 Points and Junior College Transfer Larry Cone who tallied 15. Bell is a 5-7 freshman. Other probable starters include Mike Hawkins Jim Mcdede and David Sluganski. A a we re coming off a losing Effort and the kids have worked hard in practice a Davis said. A the Effort has been there and we Hope they will dedicate themselves to winning this one. We need it badly. In the last game with the Abbey we had a super Effort from Smith or we probably would not have won that Belmont owns wins Over Lenoir Rhyne.
