Havana AP report outlines Fidel Castro's 1955 platform calling for nationalizing American financed utilities in Cuba and distributing American sugar estates to Cuban peasants. The plan also includes confiscating corruptly acquired property and expanding public housing and rural electrification.
Bearded Castro forces advance into Havana with truck convoys from Matanzas and Las Villas. They seize the former Batista base at Camp Columbia as provisional leadership forms in Santiago and aims to move government to Havana. Castro rejects Batista era provisional rulers and accuses Cantillo of betrayal as he tightens grip ahead of a final consolidation.
Barbara Massey, a former Wake Forest student from Greensboro, pleads guilty to soliciting a felony in a plot to hire a Charlotte detective to kill the wife of a Greensboro patrolman. She receives a 12 month suspended sentence and must comply with court conditions. Meanwhile Eastern Air Lines reaches a peace pact with engineers and pilots, ending a 38 day strike that grounded 188 planes.
London dispatch reports no contact from the balloon The Small World after its December 12 launch from the Canary Islands. The crew of three men and a woman vanished from radio contact for 15 days and the 46 foot craft was last sighted December 14, about 300 miles from the Canarias with around 3,000 miles remaining to reach the West Indies.
A station wagon with seven occupants drove onto a railroad crossing near Salisbury North Carolina and was struck by a Southern Railway train. Four people died and three others were injured. The fatalities were identified as Helen Ellenburg Cathy McIntyre and Gerald McIntyre all of Woodleaf and Seydell Nichols of Salisbury. The driver Reba McIntyre was among those injured.
Washington reports a liberal bloc seeks to curb the Rules Committee’s power, aiming to change rules or add a liberal Democrat to the eight Democrat four Republican panel. Speaker Sam Rayburn, returning from Texas, appears to oppose changes as negotiations continue ahead of the Democratic caucus. Republican leaders say Rayburn is aligned to keep the committee as is, with vacancies for two Republican members set to go to Edgar Chenoweth and Carroll Reece.
A New Year weekend disaster toll rose to 28 dead from fires and explosions. Victims included children in Rochester New York and several families lndividuals in Indiana Kentucky Washington Massachusetts Texas and Arizona. Fires caused most deaths with asphyxiation noted in several cases.
U S officials monitor safety of citizens in Cuba and await a new government. Castro supporters take over the Cuban Embassy. Betancourt says sugar plantations and utilities will not nationalize. Betancourt says Castro cannot be president due to age and denies Communist ties.
Three Associated Press journalists covering Havana’s post-revolt chaos were detained for about 30 minutes by armed Cuban rebels. Larry Allen, George Kaufman, and Harold Valentine were escorted to a police station after rebels smashed the Post building windows and questioned them about ownership of a pistol. They were freed and allowed to return to the bullet-damaged office.
Traffic deaths during the four day New Year holiday were rising at about four per hour after 40 hours, risking surpassing the 409 deaths set in 1956-57. The National Safety Council estimated a toll near 390 for the period, noting the prior Christmas spike of 504 did not deter drivers this weekend.
President Eisenhower told Soviet leaders that peaceful coexistence should apply to Berlin crisis. He cautioned that US, Britain, and France seek dialogue without coercion, urging a wider German framework. Khrushchev and Voroshilov expressed hope for reducing tensions and avoiding a new war.
