Fire damages Daniel Lumber Company planing room
Greensboro fire crews battled a major blaze at Daniel Lumber Co on Stanley Road destroying a 225 by 60 foot single level planing room and heavily injuring adjoining storage sheds. No injuries were reported as trucks from Sedgefield and Pinecroft assisted and water was drawn from a nearby pond. The site lies about two miles from Interstate 40 near Red Road.

95 Years Old Singing Founder Joe Hartley Dies
Joe L. Hartley, 95, founder of the "singing on the mountain" event, died in Cannon Memorial Hospital Banner Elk. He chaired the Grandfather Mountain festival, attended every song fest, and lived in Avery County as a fire warden, caretaker and farmer. Funeral Tuesday at People’s Methodist Linville. Burial Tanlgewood Cemetery Linville. The mountain event drew thousands from several states each June. Hartley pictured a sharp memory and wit despite slowing pace, and recalled mountain life and faith.
