L-39 by Andy Lang styles in architecture go through varying stages of popularity Over the years but the traditional colonial styling always manages to keep a Large and Loyal following. Here s a simple design that exudes warmth and hospitality yet does not require a Large lot and has an excellent floor plan with no Cross traffic from the front foyer. While architect William g. Chirgotis offers Complete living on one floor the plan provides the Opportunity of utilizing the expansion space upstairs for additional living area if so desired. Plans for the upper floor include two lfi?~6? Long a Large Bath and generous closet and storage space. Even if this were not done during the original construction the need for use of the expansion might arise at some later time. Outside hand split Wood shingles and horizontally paned windows carry out the up dated traditional theme. The front Gable Brick planter Sill height Brick veneered Wall window Flower Box and shutters Are touches that give the Small House its charming appearance. The Interior is equally Well planned to the left of the spacious Entrance foyer with its dramatic Cathedral ceiling is the living room with a log burning Brick faced fireplace and Corner picture window. Straight ahead the Hall leads directly to the dining room properly placed next to the Kitchen for easy serving. The modern Kitchen Dinette has an a shaped arrangement of cabinets and appliances including a built in Range with ventilating Hood and a Mullion widowed Dinette overlooking the rear Terrace. To the right of the rear foyer is the bathroom and the two bedrooms note the seven closets in this area. The Stair from the rear Hall leads to the full basement where there is generous space for a recreation room workshop laundry room storage space and utilities. In addition to the cellar storage the one car garage is Large enough to provide space for the Power tools Garden furniture etc., which Are now part of the suburban scene. If the Width of the lot permits the single car garage May easily be extended to House two cars. The Over All length of this House 154?T 6? includes the garage and makes it possible in Many communities to place this House on a lot Between 65?T and 75?T wide. This of course. Would have to be checked with the local zoning and building requirements. It has what seems to be a varnish finish on it. The finish is in Good condition but i have been told that most Good furniture these Days comes with a lacquer finish. Can i put a lacquer finish right Over the varnish a. A definitely no. Lacquer has a tendency to soften varnish and virtually any other kind of surface coating. It should not be applied Over anything except lacquer or lacquer thinner. If you really want a lacquer finish you will have to strip off the old material with a varnish remover apply lacquer thinner and then lacquer. But if the old finish is in As Good a condition As you say it is Why not leave it that Way varnish is still a Beautiful finishing material. A. A we bought a House recently. When we looked at it there was a walk in shed in the backyard where the owner kept Wood for the fireplace in the living room. After we moved in we discovered that the shed had been dismantled and taken away. The previous owner said it was never intended that the shed was to go with the House. How can we get him to replace it a. A this is a matter for a lawyer but in a afraid you done to have much of a Case unless the sales contract specified that the shed was included in the Deal. This illustrates once More the Neces sity of being certain that there is a Clear written understanding of what is being purchased. Q a i wanted to attach a shelf to the Back of one of our closet doors. It was t until i tried to drive screws into the door that i discovered it was hollow neither screws or nails will hold Well enough to support shelf brackets. What can i do a. A your local hardware dealer can solve your problem quickly. Tell him what you plan to do and ask him for hollow Wall fasteners. Thiere Are several varieties on the Market some designed to support Light weights some heavy. Q a a what about this business of sprinkling Talcum powder Between floor boards to halt squeaking my neighbor did it and it worked Fine i followed his advice but the floor squeaks just As much As it always did. I know about nailing the boards to the beams but i was hoping to avoid it does powder work or does no to it a. A you re right. It does work and it does no to. In your neighbors Case there probably was a slight brushing of boards against each other As the floor was walked on. Powder served As a sort of lubricant and eliminated the squeaking. But its Only a temporary measure As your Friend will discover when the boards begin to squeak again some time in the future. In your Case the squeaking May result from a More Basic cause such As boards that have come Loose from the floor joists. Q a i recently bought some White paint because i intend to paint the outside of my House one of these weeks. The other Day in looking at the Label. I noticed that it says a self cleaning on it. What does this mean and can i use this paint on my Wood shingled house0 a. You purchased a paint which contains a chalking substance intended to keep the whiteness intact Over a Long period. During a rain the Chalk flows downward and takes the dust and dirt with it. Hence the term a self the chalking qualities often last for years. If the Power part of your House has Brick or stones that might be marred by the Chalk you would be Wise to Exchange the paint for one without chalking properties. Q a i want to put a fibreglass roof on our Patio which is 28 feet one Way 14 feet the other. I planned on using 2 by 4s for the rafters but a neighbor says he does no to think they Are Large enough. Is he right a. A you might get by with 2 by 4s, but it would be false Economy. Use 2 by 6s and you la have a stronger framework. Q. We have a mahogany table with a tiny scratch in it. I believe i read a Long time ago that such a scratch can be disguised by painting it with iodine the kind kept in a Medicine Cabinet. Will this harm the Wood a. A iodine will do Fine for this purpose but you a better be sure that it will be the proper Shade when it dries. Try it first on the underside of the table. It won t Hurt the Wood. By or. Fix chemists have come up with glues that will do almost anything Reading the claims for them however might Lead the potential user to believe that each of them is capable of doing everything. Adhesives have become better but More specialized. While there is no All purpose adhesive you can now find a special glue for just about anything you have in mind. Most will handle a variety of jobs but the results will be More satisfactory if you pick the one Best suited for a particular task. One glue that comes pretty close to handling most jobs around the House is the widely popular White glue a polyvinyl glue mat comes in plastic squeeze bottles. It is a Good glue to have on hand because it is cheap convenient nontoxic and nonflammable. It has a milk White color but when it dries it is Clear. Basically it is a Good glue but it can be used for fabrics paper card Board and leather. It is not Ood for joints that will have great pressure on them. Use it indoors to reinforce Woodwork joined with nails or screws. Unlike Many other glues it will not stain the work. It sets in about a half hour with moderate pressure but requires a full 24 hours before attaining full strength. For general woodworking where a Strong Bond is required you can still use the old fashioned liquid animal glue it also called hide or fish glue. Furniture makers like them because they Are Strong but set slowly enough so that parts can be properly positioned before they Are clamped. They do not make a Waterproof Bond however and some of them May stain Light coloured Wood so care should be used in application. For better woodworking joints Fine furniture veneer application use plastic resin glue. This is a powder and is mixed with water. Joints must be tighter fitting than with other glues and you will have to Clamp the work for about to hours. The glue will not stain is Waterproof and quite Strong. For absolute Waterproof joints such As in outdoor Wood furniture use Resorcinol glues which come in a combination of powder and liquid and must be mixed precisely and used within careful temperature limits. Follow instructions and make certain joints Are tight and smooth since the glue shrinks. Casein glue is another powder and water glue that can be applied even in a Cool basement and on Loose fitting Wood joints it is not Waterproof. Epoxy adhesives Are among the newest and most unusual. They glue just about anything to anything surfaces need not be porous and therefore they can be used on Glass Metal and plastics. They must be mixed precisely they come in two parts and they Harden chemically rather than by evaporation so they work even in the absence of air they Are heat resistant so Are Good for Kitchen items. They Are not Sticky in the usual sense so glued items must be held in place until the glue gets hard. It clean Root carpet. With def steam extraction a a it a a a a a a a a Mhz a it.
