Lobbyists to Battle Over City Tax on Phone Franchises
Raleigh February 27. A coalition of telephone company executives and lobbyists gathers for a Senate Public Utilities Committee hearing on a bill to tax 1 percent of gross intra city receipts in exchange for franchise rights. The bill, introduced by Flannagan and Johnston, would standardize charges across cities, replacing local bargaining. Estimated annual costs would exceed $59,000 for Southern Bell and $19,000 for Carolina Telephone. Company officials argue the tax is undue and that current separate deals should continue.
