Miners Rally Over Deferment Of Fellow Worker In Deep South and Montana
In Kinston North Carolina Richard Salter 22 and Robert Sargent 23 escapees were shot and captured by Kinston Police after a confrontation near Salter’s home. Salter died and Sargent surrendered. Penal Director Oscar Pitts said the escapees stayed armed and officers acted cautiously. Salter had a 1941 sentence for breaking and entering with prior escapes. Sargent had a 1941 sentence for kidnapping larceny and highway robbery. In Pittsburgh Pennsylvania coal miners protested a deferment for Walter Ek Chaffon 27 drawing draft exemptions. Ek Chaffon works a 700 acre farm in his spare time and would enter the army if reclassified. The Montour Number 4 mine faced a three day halt with 650 idle miners demanding fair treatment for deferments. Company officials said Ekon’s technical role keeps him indispensable as the mine runs one week behind. The union pressed for replacements and criticized deferment policy. Lewis and Clark noted as the first white men to enter Idaho. Telephone lines could reach the moon and back many times.
