The German assault on Verdun intensifies with heavy artillery and a claimed fort Douaumont capture. French officials deny the fort’s loss while observers note unprecedented shelling and strategic stakes in the northeast Verdun region.
Berlin reports Fort Douaumont, guarding Verdun, fell to German forces yesterday afternoon. The fort sits four miles northeast of Verdun and forms part of a ring of fortifications protecting the city from the east, marking the greatest advance in the German Verdun drive so far.
Paris reports the German assault north of Verdun intensifies with heavy sacrifices as the war office confirms continued bombardment and fighting this afternoon.
Salisbury February 26 The trial of superintendent J S Mann and guards for allowing a prison transfer escape on February 16 concluded with fines for three guards. H F Stanley fined 300 dollars plus costs H C Tope 100 dollars plus costs and T R Conmer 50 dollars plus costs. Mann and Clements urged clemency avoiding imprisonment.

Hickory Feb 26 A broken flange caused the derailment of the southbound C. N. W. passenger train No. 1 injuring Engineer Bob Smyre and fireman John Henderson slightly. No passengers were hurt. Northbound No. 19 turned at Lenoir and returned to Chester on its schedule.
The Guillord county Baraca-Philathea union will aid a meeting here Sunday March 2. It will have two sessions, afternoon and evening. The feature will be Marshall A. Hudson United States Baraca-Philathea president and municipal speaker of the day. Hudson is a notable figure and may draw many visitors and delegates from the county classes.
A caller raised a fire alarm from Box No. 2h at 11 o'clock on Main and Key streets. Two fire trucks responded. Officials warn against turning in false alarms and promise penalties for anyone convicted.
