Hospital staff and doctors at High Point Memorial moved to improve emergency service. A meeting of the executive committees set in motion plans to present recommendations to the trustees at a Sheraton Hotel session tomorrow.
Detective Archie Carter said a seven has confessed to robbing safes totaling $2,500 in Goldsboro and Wilson. The suspect Ollie Holt, 28, allegedly held up a dry cleaners and a bus station in Wilson during multiple incidents.
Coroner's jury rules the death of Marion Womack Adams 26 a homicide. Adams had testified in the first murder trial of Ollie Sally, a Durham merchant convicted of justice in December. Winston-Salem Republican vice chairman candidate N. K. Hickman seeks party post.
Former U S Senator William B Umstead sets up campaign headquarters in Raleigh at the Master Room of the Six Walter Hotel to lead the North Carolina Democratic gubernatorial bid.
In Raleigh the State Highway W. H. Rogers project bids will be opened tomorrow for improvement works. The low bids will be reviewed by the State Highway Commission on Thursday.
Raleigh hears a hearing set by the State Utilities Commission on Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co.’s request to raise NC rates by 1.78 million dollars annually to achieve a fair return on net investment. Sanford reports Eugene Gordon to run a large Democratic rally at Gov. Scott’s Haw River farm next August with W. W. Staton announcing Gordon as general chairman for the event.
Prices edged upward on the New York stock exchange as third straight advance unfolds. Early activity showed 290000 shares traded, with General Refractories rising to 42 1 2, Lehman 72 3 8, and Scott Paper 52 1 4, while Metals and American Metals gained modestly and oils mixed.
Washington economist Dr. J M Klamon warned that restoring fair trade laws would raise consumer costs by 10 to 12 percent, equating to a sales tax. He testified before a House subcommittee while a New York department store faced a price war over branded goods sold at fair trade prices. Proposals seek to fix minimum resale prices, but critics say they break antitrust norms and harm living standards.
NATO ministers raced to adjourn as plans emerged to give Gen Eisenhower about 50 divisions and 4,000 warplanes by 1952. The United States would provide seven divisions for Western Europe, with the Marine unit likely kept at home unless an emergency. Kefauver criticizes Truman as corruption fight continues. Ellis Arnall predicts Truman winning many states.
Ellis Arnall vows to lift ceilings "as fast as it can be done" but not yet enacting broad decontrol. He will keep the DiSalle committee to study lifting ceilings on select goods like clothing and shoes and noted prices would rise if ceilings were removed now.
