Child Dies After Memorial Hospital ER Delays

A four year old girl Brenda Anders died at Memorial Hospital after a car struck her at the corner of Main and Washington Streets. Doctors Dr. J. Slate Dr. Schafer and Dr. Stout attended but could not save her. Witnesses blame delays in emergency care and call for improved standby physicians. Brenda was the daughter of Dallas and Lucy Anders born May 6 1947 in Elizabethton Tennessee. Funeral arrangements are pending at Yow's Funeral Home.

Pension Plan Ruling By WSB Expands Pension Rules

The Wage Stabilization Board issued a long awaited policy on retirement pension plans. It allows unlimited employer and worker contributions and benefits while setting three minimum standards for approval: 65 as normal retirement age, lifetime benefits for non death payments, and no cash surrender value for early terminations until normal retirement. Reduced early retirement benefits may apply to preserve fund soundness. The policy aims to clear a backlog of wage cases and streamline plan approvals.

Smith Demands Repudiation of Truman by Southern Democrats

Sen. Willis D. Smith urged Southern Democrats at a Jefferson Jackson Day event in Richmond to repudiate President Truman. Jailer Irby Pays Fine After Conviction in Prisoner Beating

Reuben L. Irby, former Sumter County jailer, paid a $100 fine after a Federal Court conviction for beating three Negro women prisoners. A jury acquitted him on 11 other counts of mistreatment. District Judge Tim Bell ordered a suspended sentence of five to six months in jail as an alternative.

Father and two sons injured in North Main crosswalk crash

A local man Mann aged 42 and his two sons were struck by a southbound 1948 Dodge near the Broadhurst Theatre on North Main. The driver Gilbert 39 of Grace Street told police he did not see them until too late and rendered aid after the collision. All three were hospitalized after the October incident.

Eisenhower to Visit Greece and Turkey Early March

Paris reports Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower will visit Greece and Turkey in early March as both nations joined the North Atlantic pact. A NATO-related trip would follow his European tour and no plan exists for a U.S. visit, according to a headquarters spokesman. NATO to form biggest peacetime buildup across Europe

The NATO council endorsed a master plan for a vast peacetime defense buildup in Europe.
