Residents face a final two day window to register for the street improvement bond election in High Point. Reported turnout shows about half of voters already registered, with opponents organizing and supporters urging action ahead of Saturday’s deadline.
Fayetteville reports tell of Robert N. McNeely a North Carolina legislator drowned when the British ship Persia sank. His fiancée Miss Wilma Whitacre a Beulah Buck quartet member delayed marriage plans to wed abroad after he was named American consul at Aden. The couple had met in Raleigh and soon after became engaged before war fears halted their wedding plans.
Melbourne reports that no further salvage is possible for the Emden remains or trophies. Guns and gear were partially removed last year from North Keeling Island and handed to the Commonwealth. In 1915 the Protector went to Cocos to assess salvage but the stern half had vanished and heavy surf prevented boarding.

Charlotte Feb 21 The Piedmont and Northern lines began freight trains into Belmont Gaston county with passenger service delayed until a specially built interurban car from High Point is completed in about two weeks. Belmont Junction links Belmont spur to the Charlotte Gastonia main line. Four miles from the main line, three months of construction precede regular service. Lethia Robbins, an elderly Black woman, was sentenced in Municipal Court to three months in the work house after a Tuesday night disturbance on Main Street. Officers say she fought, scratched, and cursed, while she claims she simply threw a fit. A ten dollar cost bill remains unpaid and will be worked off. the judge warned no whisky and noted a likely mid summer completion of her sentence.
Morganton deputies pursue Charlie Mace after his wife is found shot and killed at their home eight miles from Morganton. Governor Crate issues a mitlaw with a $100 reward. Mace fled into the South mountains as deputies deploy a large search effort and a blockading outfit with mash is found at the scene.
Tokyo. Jan. 25. Four young men linked to radical politics were arrested in the bomb attack on Premier Count Okuma returning from an imperial banquet. Leaders named Amataro Shimomiura and Wagoro Fukuda a newspaper writer, Jujiro Onikura, Masakichi Wada. Fukuda alleged to have ties to Peoples Diplomacy and riots after Portsmouth treaty. Confessions reportedly made by two suspects. motive and political involvement under discussion.
