Extension Work Began Texas Farm Demonstration 50 Years Ago
A movement that reshaped American farming began in Texas in 1903 with Seaman A.oe leading the first organized farm demonstration near Terrell, Kaufman County. Walter C. Porter hosted the trial to prove scientifically based methods and records, sparking nationwide demand for extension farms and culminating in the 1914 Smith Lever Act creating the Cooperative Extension Service. The system now reaches about 85 percent of U.S. farm families and involves millions of contacts yearly through news, radio, television, publications, and direct farm visits.
