Allied tank and infantry in a five hour clash on the Western Front repelled a Chinese ambush southeast of Panmunjom. About 60 Communists killed and at least 40 wounded. 175 Chinese uniforms surrounded the raiding party before the breakout.
Tokyo AP reported General Mark Clark denounced Communist germ warfare charges as baseless and questioned the authenticity of statements attributed to Marine Col. Frank Schwable. He urged independent scientists from non Communist countries to verify the truth and expressed sympathy for the allegedly coerced servicemen.
Temple University president Dr Robert L Johnson says he will study the governments overseas information program for a month and may take the post as director later He met with Secretary Dulles and says he will explore all possibilities while supporting the Voice of America in the Cold War propaganda effort
Greensboro report by State Auditor Henry Bridges found irregularities in the college accounts. N. C. Webster, 51, was dismissed as bursar and athletic committee chairman. L. A. Wise, bookstore manager, named to succeed him. Bridges withheld many figures stating they have not been verified.
In Elizabethtown North Carolina a murder rape trial against Douglas Grayson moved forward with a 100 person jury panel drawn from out of county. His lawyers protested selecting Bladen County jurors citing publicity. Judge W T Hatch granted the motion and ordered 100 jurors report from Robeson County.
The United Nations General Assembly begins the second half of its seventh session amid pessimism over the Korean truce talks. New U S delegates take seats as Canada's Lester Pearson opens proceedings. Vishinsky and Soviet delegates arrive noncommittal.
The market opened with strong gains as margins were cut from 75 to 50 percent. Rail, motor, metal, oil, steel, and tire issues rose, led by American Telephone and Kennecott, while New York Central and Dallas lines showed notable activity. Volume hit 870,000 shares in the first hour.

Governor Umstead backs a bill to abolish the nine member State Ports Authority and let the governor appoint its leadership on June 1. The plan would authorize inland port development and keep Southport facilities under SPA. The executive director appointment would require the governor’s approval. Col. George W. Gillette currently holds the post.
In Rome six Western European foreign ministers discussed a Dutch plan for a tariff union within five years and parallel programs for deeper economic and political integration. France pressed changes to the European Defense Treaty while Adenauer warned against allowing France to withdraw troops from a unified European army.
Gov. Umstead told the North Carolina General Assembly in his budget message that bond issues totaling 87 million dollars should be approved. He urged funding for schools, mental hospitals, and other institutions, and asked for teacher pay boosts beyond the 10 percent recommended. He left the question of raising sales tax and broader revenue measures to the legislature and warned against financing increases with uncertain funds.
