Washington reports the federal government assumed relief administration in Oklahoma and announced a 5 million dollar program to buy grain and livestock feed for farmers in drought areas of the west.
Two men were gravely injured in a bomb blast at the Cuban owned India tires agency in Havana early today. Reporter Ainslie dies in Baltimore hospital at 66 after operations. noted for church unity and world friendship work.
Charles D. Casey Stengel, former Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder and 1932 coach, was named manager of the Dodgers for 1934 and 1935, succeeding Max Carey.
Ivy Agnes Proctor six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs J F Proctor of Nash county was fatally struck by a packing plant truck as she tried to board a bus near her home. The truck operated by a Black driver with unnamed identity fled. Police investigated the incident.
Smith Hagaman of Boone is named superintendent of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem to succeed the late Rev. G. T. Lumpkin. Hagaman, for 17 years superintendent of public instruction in Watauga County and three years chairman of the Watauga Hospital board, is active in the Baptist church.
In Charlottesville on February 23 President C. P. Miles named a committee of five to recodify the Southern Conference by laws and constitution and report back to the conference tomorrow morning.
In Lincolnton on February 23, 19 year old George Grady Rash despondent over debts and unemployment killed himself. He left a note to his young wife stating This is the best way out of my troubles.
The House expected a March 12 vote on veterans bonus payments as Ways and Means rejects obstruction. Senate and House recesses limit action to committees. Senate stock investigators reveal a 1929 market surge with over twenty billion dollars in loans by industries. New York Exchange advocates oppose Fletcher Rayburn control bill on constitutional and economic grounds. The House honored late Representative Hooper of Michigan with eulogies before adjournment. Leopold III was enthroned after taking the oath to defend the constitution before Belgium’s Parliament. The 32 year old prince rode in full regalia from Laeken to the Chamber of Deputies amid cheering crowds and foreign dignitaries, while Queen Astrid traveled separately to the parliament amid royal preparations.
In Taylorsville on February 23 evidence was completed and arguments began in the murder trial of B. G. Green, 47, and his son Lester Green, 24, for the slaying of T. C. Barnes, cashier of the Merchants and Farmers Bank during an attempted holdup last July.
Senate committee releases figures showing twenty large corporations advanced over 20 billion dollars into the 1928 speculative boom with Standard Oil of New Jersey posting the largest total. Testimony covered broker loans by Cities Service and Electric Bond and Share as the trial in a separate case moves toward a jury verdict.
