Forced on U-Boat to Sign a German Document
Third Officer James M. Scott of the Orteric reports the submarine commander forced Captain McGill to sign a German declaration during the sinking off Alexandria on December 10. The master, who could not read the paper, was then allowed to leave with the crew in small boats after the U-boat fired more as a red cross flag flew. The Orteric carried 6930 tons and nitrate of soda from Chile bound for Alexandria. 10 Europeans and 50 Chinese were aboard, with two Chinese killed.
