President opposes cash payment of the bonus as not the time for action. Speaker Rainey announced the White House stance after 131 signatures on Lundeen petition aimed at forcing a House vote. Democratic leaders, Burns of Tennessee, and Rainey expect the bill to pass if signed, with the President’s view shaping the action.
A severe cold snap and gale conditions across the Atlantic seaboard caused fires and transportation disruptions. In Brookville Pennsylvania ten elderly women perished in a blaze at the Pennsylvania Memorial Home infirmary, as firefighters battled 18 below zero conditions and freezing water supply.
Funeral services for M. J. Wrenn prominent furniture maker and longtime Wesley Memorial church stewards board member will be at 3:30 p m Wednesday from 202 Broad Street. Dr. Lambeth and Dr. Conrad will officiate. Interment at Oakwood Memorial Park. Firms tied to Wrenn pause operations in his memory. North State Telephone also affected.

Eight cars of a northbound Southern train derailed at Cramerton when a truck broke. No injuries were reported and passenger service on the double tracked line was not obstructed. Wrecking crews moved in to clear the tracks and begin repairs.

John J. McGraw, 60, longtime New York Giants manager, appeared to be holding his own against uremic poisoning after being hospitalized in New Rochelle. Doctors released bulletins noting gravity of his condition but denied a coma. he was reported resting and sleeping in the sickroom.
Court officers in Taylorsville issued a special venire of 100 men from Iredell County to jury the Bascom Greens and son Lester in the July bank holdup slaying of T. C. Barnes. The defendants, captured in Morristown Tennessee, pleaded not guilty as judge Wilson Warlick denied a continuance. Barnes died days after gunfire wounded cashier Solon Little. two other bandits were sentenced to die after murder convictions.
Gastonla Feb 20 Reese Hill a Negro was held without bail on charges of second degree murder after L A Clemmer 68 a former contractor was struck by a car near Dallas last night Clemmer died from the crash and Hill faces murder allegations in connection with the incident.
Postmaster General Farley departs tonight for a southern swing delivering speeches in Jacksonville Savannah and Durham North Carolina on consecutive days outlining postal policy and administrative plans.

AP dispatch reports John R. Steele was appointed acting postmaster at Ramseur North Carolina by Postmaster General Farley. The appointment was announced today and designates Steele to oversee local mail operations.
Smithfield was hit by a morning blaze that destroyed the Sanders building occupying a quarter block and damaged the Presbyterian church. The Sanders structure housed the local post office Western Union office and a 650 seat theater. Fire began about 12 30 am and the Smithfield hotel guests were evacuated briefly before the blaze was controlled.
C R Younts of Thomasville was sought for questioning after forged North Carolina state checks appeared in several locations. Two Greensboro merchants identified him from photographs as the man who issued the forgeries. Patrols arrested him but could not locate him. Forged checks totaling about 800 dollars were passed in the prior three months.
J. A. Brady and Pellie Brady were arrested on bigamy charges after officers found they had prior marriages without divorces and wed again. The couple admitted the prior marriages and lack of divorce. Bond was set at $1,000.
Washington February authors advocate Bankhead compulsory crop control for flue cured tobacco along with cotton. North Carolina Tobacco Growers Association board members seek to protect farmers who join acreage reduction from non-cooperators. They plan talks with farm administration officials to extend Bankhead plan to tobacco with poundage allotments and a high sales tax above fixed limits.
