Reports from Petrograd say Turks fled Erzerum after its capture with no strong Turkish resistance. Russians push along the Black Sea coast and near Trebizond while an offensive or auxiliary moves by Germany appear on the western front.
Representative Heflin of Alabama told Attorney General Gregory there is a bear operator corner in New York depressing raw cotton prices. Assistant Attorney General Todd, head of anti trust prosecutions, said he is investigating Sherman act violations with no formal charges or evidence produced.
A resolution from Representative London of New York proposes a five member presidential commission to develop a national insurance fund for workers' subsistence during unemployment sickness or old age. The panel would report to the President by September and aim to create employment through development and exploitation of national resources.
Federal judge acts to seize the liner Appam as British owners seek admiralty prize relief. British claim Hague Conference may require return to owners while Germany's prize status remains under treaty. The case likely will be bitterly contested and could span years.
The city will close for Francis Willard memorial services at First Baptist Church Sunday night at 7 50. The program features special music and two addresses under the Woman's Christian Temperance Union with Loyal Temperance Union ushers. Funds from the offering support national temperance work.
Raleigh reports Earl Cotton and James Freeman among eight prisoners who fled from a Salisbury train were recaptured and moved to Graphiteville. Cotton was nabbed at Old Fort and Freeman near Salisbury.
In Salisbury Jamesa Freeman, captured after an escape by seven prisoners, said the guard was doped with coca cola supplied by inmates. The statement to H. F. Stanly is not released. The army ordered a board to investigate Senator Robinson's charges against Lt. Col. Reber and the aviation service.
Washington on February 19 Daniel Sully of New York was awarded 30000 damages in his suit against John Jiavs Hammond of this city who he claims tried to ruin his reputation as a cotton expert. The verdict by a District of Columbia Supreme court jury followed a five week trial and a prior mistrial. Sully originally sued for 1500000.
Durham February 1. Directors recommend to stockholders an increase of capital stock from 1 750 000 to 2 500 000. Of the 2 500 000, 1 250 000 will be common stock with the remainder preferred. A new large manufacturing building will be erected in Croldsboro.
Four people died and at least a dozen injured in a nighttime blast at Semet Solvay’s large split rock plant in Syracuse New York. The factory, specializing in picric acid for explosives and dyes, suffered heavy property damage and was heavily guarded. Cause of the explosion was not yet known.
