Ervin Opens New Round of Voting Rights Hearings
Senator Sam J. Ervin Jr. leads a Senate panel into a fresh set of hearings on voting rights legislation after rejecting a five year extension with two admin-proposed provisions. Clarence Mitchell and Senator Joseph D. Tydings are slated to testify as the Judiciary Committee races to report by March 1. President Nixon’s administration bill is opposed by Ervin as unconstitutional in an evenhanded sense. The current act, due to expire in August, is praised by supporters for boosting registration of nearly a million Southern Black voters.
