Geoffrey Hague a 16 year old Morristown explorer scout was found dead in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Walker Prong stream drainage area about three miles from US 441 where he vanished while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Park officials said dogs led the search and suggested he slipped on snow or ice on a trail and tumbled down a cliff. Earlier officials believed he might have reached US 441 and been picked up by a motorist.
In a nationally broadcast address Nixon details steps to curb nuclear arms parity with the Soviet Union, expand the Safeguard ABM system, and pursue negotiations with Hanoi, Israel, and Beijing. He calls for a new high level policy group on Vietnam, promoting Western Europe security and partnerships with developing nations.
Army investigators questioned hundreds regarding the fatal stabbings of Captain Jeffrey MacDonald's wife Colette and two daughters at his Ft. Bragg apartment. No prime suspects identified. MacDonald injured but alive. Authorities found multiple weapons and noted a bloodlit scene with a carved pig message.
A federal appeals court defines a unitary system and orders Orange County Florida to implement a neighborhood pupil assignment plan that leaves three all black schools intact while desegregating eight others. The ruling allows transfers to nearby predominantly white schools on a space available basis with protections for black students. The decision stems from the court’s view that de segregation requires progress across enrollment faculty staff transport facilities and activities.
