Labor leader calls for stronger unions at Salisbury meet
Emil Rieve of Philadelphia, head of the American Federation of Hosiery Workers, told North Carolina textile workers that a large labor movement will raise the state as an industrial and unionized center. He endorsed more union organization under the NRA code, and urged a regional labor board, worker protections, and restraint from company unions. Rieve noted codes helped manufacturers in 1933 and urged peaceful negotiation with employers. R. R. Lawrence urged labor to engage in politics and push for shorter work weeks, higher minimums, free school books, and better compensation legislation.
