Guard Mack Calvin who had hit one of four shots in the first half for Carolina found himself open for a total of 26 for the game As he picked the club up to insure the Victory. He hit six of nine Field goals in the second half and dropped in 12 of 14 free throws for the game to turn off the spurs. Afterwards Calvin Wasny to conceding anything to the nets. A a we be got 19 games left and anything can happen Quot he said a we Don t play new York anymore so we can t gain on them without relying on the other teams. But As far As we re concerned we still think we can win ibb Mon Point enter disc sports saturday afternoon february 16,1974section r Calvin canned 15 Points in the fourth Quarter to keep the spurs at Bay. The third Quarter ended in a tie but Calvin hit a pair of free throws and a three Point play to give the cougars a boost in the third. That s when Carolina built up As much As an eight Point Lead and took control of the game. Calvin freed himself for several Long jumpers that he had t been getting in the first half. A i just hit the free jumpers Quot said Calvin. A i guess i was t in position to get the shots in the first half but in the second i calving a backcourt teammate Gene Littles agreed that the cougars weren t out of the race and he praised the play of Calvin. A the seems to be shooting with a lot More Confidence since the All Star game Quot Littles said. A i think he a first place in race of champions Donohue s retirement party Happy by Benny Phillips associate sports editor Daytona Beach. Fla. A Mark Donohue at the age whoopee find Homes Atlanta a. A five members of the disbanded Macon whoopee team have found new Homes with other clubs in the Southern hockey league. The financially troubled Macon franchise was dissolved Friday leaving the league with just four teams. Earlier in the season the St. Petersburg. Fla., franchise folded the remaining teams selected five Macon players Friday in a draft conducted in reverse order of the league standings. Drafting first fourth place Winston Salem chose defens Eman Mike Tenasse. Third place Greensboro followed by selecting Center Norm Metcalfe and second place Charlotte drafted defens Eman Norm Schmitz. Roanoke Valley which has already clinched the leagues regular season Crown did not select anyone on the second round Winston Salem passed Greensboro chose defens Eman left Winger Georges Gendron and Charlotte picked defens Eman Wayne Bushie. He picked up $41,000 for first place in the last of four events in the International race of champions it was Donohue s last race. He announced in october that he would retire when the race of champions was finished he confirmed this Friday. A one involved does no to know How much racing Means until it comes time to he remarked. Quot already i am beginning to miss the part of the sport i love Best a driving. Nevertheless. The final six Drivers in the series set sail Over the 3.81-mile Daytona Road course in various coloured porsche Carreras. Donohue was eight seconds ahead of Peter Rev son at the finish. The dash for the Flag was for second place and Revson edged by Bobby Unser coming Down the Homestretch on the last Lap. David Pearson who turned the 95-mile journey into a comedy was fourth. George Follmer was running second when he went out on the 13th Lap with transmission problems. He finished fifth and a. J. Foyt was sixth. Foyt charged to the front on the Start but went out with engine failure on the second Lap. Follmer led the first two laps of the race and then Donohue took command on Lap three and relinquished the Lead. He averaged 114 979 Miles per hour. For the four races Donohue wheeled dealer and collected a total of $54,500. The first three races were held at Riverside Donohue won the first third and fourth. Follmer was the Only other Winner taking the second event. The win marked the 49th time of Donohue s career that he has taken the Check ered Flag. His Victory in the 1972 Indianapolis 500 is what he Calls his greatest Victory. A Follmer and i were having a close race until i was Able to shake him and then later he had mechanical problems. But i was very Happy to get him off my rear bumber. He had been hanging there a very Long time and finally i decided to make a couple of mistakes on purpose on the infield part of the track to see if he would not follow. Usually in a Road race a second car will follow where a Lead car takes it. A i made a couple of false moves George followed and As a result got off the course onto the grass and i was Able to get away from him. What i did mind you was nothing that was dangerous for him Quot Pearson a car never ran right after the third Lap. He said. Twice late in the race he came Down the big track and drove straight on through the turn that carries a Driver off the big race track onto the infield course by doing this Pearson Cut off the part of going through the Road course. Of course he was penalized each time but he was running last on the track anyway. A i would Cut across the infield Jake if i could have been sure one of these things would float Quot he remarked in Overall Money for All four races Revson was second to Donohue with $21,200. Unser third with $19,100, Follmer fourth with $16,000, Pearson fifth with $14,600 and Foyt sixth with $9,900. Playing a lot better. A a we re still hoping for some help from the other clubs against new York. But we re going to have to play it by ear from Here on in. I think things will go Down to the last to games. If new York has a three or four game Lead by then we a have to Start concentrating on which team Well have in the first round of the playoffs. Right now we done to know where Well end up so we have to prepare for anybody. The Only thing we Are sure of is that Virginia will finish in fourth san Antonio in second place in the Western division but la games off the Pace set by Utah stayed with the cougars in the first half with the additions of George Ger Vin and Swen Nater from Virginia. Gervin was High scorer for the spurs with 25 Points. Only three Points in favor of Carolina separated the clubs at the half. A we let them get the offensive rebounds in the first half and i think that made the difference Quot Littles noted Quot we Cut Down on their second shots in the second Cougar Center Mike Lewis made an appearance in the first half and played for a minute without getting a shot off. But he is expected to make a contribution before the season is Over. A Lewis is a six Vear Veteran and that fact will help Quot Calvin said. Quot he sets Good picks and screens his Man. His main asset is rebounding. I think he will help us Down the Marv Roberts gave the cougars plenty of help from the foul line where he hit nine of to for a total of 15 Points. In All the cougars hit 29 of 38 free throws. The Field goals were equal for both teams. San Antonio out rebounded the cougars by to with Nater getting nine. Carolina does t play again until sunday night in san Diego while new York has to play Utah tonight. After last night s games new York has a 40-22 record followed by Kentucky at 36-23 and Carolina at 39-27. One thing in favor of Carolina is the schedule for the remainder of the season after the Road trip the cougars open a six game Home stand which will be the longest of the season. The panthers wind up play at alumni gym at 8 of clock against Carolinas conference foe Catawba. It is also Homecoming High Point altered its lineup in thursdays Victory Over Pembroke at Home and there May be a further change for tonight. Pc coach Jerry Steele indicated he May Start Jeff Stewart because it will be his last Home game As a senior. Stewart has not been used much this season. The panthers will not have the services of backup Center Dave Mengering anymore. Mengering quit basketball at the school this week. He is the second Man to be lost. Earlier Bob Aylmer decided he had had enough and be Back. That leaves the panthers two men Short on the frontline. But if the guards keep up the work they started against Pembroke High Point May not have to depend so much on the big boys. Paul Mattox scored 18 Points As one of three guards used by Steele to Start the game Mattox beamed with Greg Bennett and Paul Cloud in the backcourt. Steele say if the three guards would go again or just which player would be shuffled to make room for Stewart. His idea is to play As Many people As the panthers need to try to run out the season on a winning note. High Point had Catawba Down on the Road in the earlier meeting but slipped badly in the second half and lost the game. It has been games like that which have left the panthers with a 3-8 league record and in last place. They threaten to finish the regular season on the Bottom for the first time since 1954. Overall High Point is 7-16 in Steele a second year on the Job after tonight a game High Point travels to Guilford next tuesday and then to Mars Hill on thursday to close out the conference schedule. By Benny Phillips associate sports editor Daytona Beach Fla a Bobby Allison comes to Daytona Beach like a fireman going to a Blaze at the mayors House. He brings everything he has leaving nothing behind. Allison came with three cars for three different races this year and Friday afternoon put one Victory under his Belt. He drove a 1973 Camaro to Victory in the 200-mile modified Road race. Today he led a Parade of cars off the line in the late Model sportsman race Over the big track and tomorrow he is among the front runners in the Daytona 450 grand National classic. Allison was nearly a Lap ahead of tiny Lund at the finish of the modified race. Lund was also in a Camaro. John Bryant was third in a Gremlin Denis Giros fourth in a Vega. And Geoff Bodine fifth in a Vega. Paul Newman of movie Fame drove his Pinto Only seven laps and finished 33rd. The race was run without a caution Flag. Allison averaged 98.879 Miles per hour and was pretty Well in control for most of the event. There were four Lead changes among three Drivers. Allison led twice for 28 laps including the final 22 Maynard Troyer was in front once for 14 laps and Paul Radford led twice for five laps. A my engine was missing the whole Way Quot said Allison. Quot sometimes i was turning up 5.000 rpm a and sometimes 6.000 at the same places on the the modified ran Over the Road course out onto the first turn of the big track through the second turn and Down the Low Backstretch but before going into the third turn were forced to slow Down and drive through a chicane a which was a curve off onto the infield and Back into the track a for the purpose of slowing the funny looking Little machines Down before they hit the fastest part of the big race track which is the Homestretch. A the chicane was a Good idea Quot pointed out Allison. A it kept the race Safe. These Little modified should not be permitted to run wide open All the Way around the big track and also you have some Guys in this race with not a great Deal of experience and this can get dangerous at Ultra High Allison was concerned with the amount of trash on the track. A that chicane however sure filled the track with sea shells. Where we were off Over there was a dirt course and we slowed up the shells and scattered them on the big track. There is enough stuff out there anyway this year. I sure Hope they get the shells up before the big cars the Hueytown ala.,Driver says he feels Good about his chances in the other races. A we just Haven to had a lot of practice time on the track. I have three cars Down Here and have run Only nine laps of practice in All three Quot he said before fridays event. 47, int Felon Chevrolet. 1. »?00 Gen Berain. Pinto 1 too a Carl a Bual Quot Steven.
